Chile Human Rights Commission Seeks to Avoid Violence Against Rapa Nui

Huilliche in Land Dispute with President Piñera
Last Friday, at the round table discussions of Ñielol, the Chief of Chiloé brought up for consideration an ongoing land dispute between the Huilliche and President Piñera that concerns 91,000 hectares of land located in Tantauco Park on Chiloé Island. The land was purchased by Piñera in 2004. The Huilliche claim that the land is part of their ancestral territory and are demanding that it be returned. Continue reading
Discussions Between Mapuche and Government Produce No Results
On Monday, representatives for the 34 Mapuche hunger strikers (who have been hunger striking for 78 days and counting) met with Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Claudio Alvarado, for more than three hours in Concepción to discuss the demands of the strikers–specifically, the application of the Antiterrorism Law to the Mapuche people. Supreme Court Issues Decision on Case Appealed from Puerto Montt Court
On September 15, 2010, the Supreme Court issued its decision in the case of the Mapuche Community Pepiukelen versus the Empresa Pesquera Los Fiordos, Ltda. On Friday, President Piñera announced to the country that a roundtable discussion with the Mapuche will commence in Temuco next week, specifically on the hill of Ñielol.
