Mapuche Convicted Under Antiterrorism Law
As reported yesterday, October 27th, in El Mercurio, Raúl Castro Antipán was convicted of arson, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts by a court in Araucanía. Chile Announces US$ 270 Million Development Plan for Rapa Nui
Following up on our earlier post, and according to an article by EMOL, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, the Minister of the Interior, announced today that the Chilean Government will invest US$ 270 million in Easter Island — which is 20 times more than what the Government’s budget has been for the Island over the past 15 years. Minister of Interior to Share Conclusions with Rapa Nui
On Friday, the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, landed on Easter Island to speak with individuals from the four working groups that were created over two months ago. These working groups had been given 60 days to address the issues of: land, immigration, the legal status of the island, and development. Rapa Nui Developments in Recent Weeks
Major developments related to the ongoing controversy on Easter Island that concern Rapa Nui land claims and self-governance rights are expected as the end of October approaches. Based on an agreement reached with some Rapa Nui clans several weaks ago, the deadline—October 24th—for the Government-formed working groups to present their reports and proposed solutions is quickly approaching. Additionally, by that deadline, 26 families are expected to receive land titles.
Supreme Court Upholds Decision Against Lafkenche Communities
On October 14, 2010 the Supreme Court upheld a decision against a number of Lafkenche communities in the Mehuin area of the Los Ríos region in Chile. The case concerns the construction of a duct to discharge treated waste water from a cellulose plant in Valdivia into the ocean. The plant belongs to the company Celulosa Arauco y Constitución, S.A. Final Mapuche Hunger Striker Ends Strike
