Final Mapuche Hunger Striker Ends Strike

Luis Marileo, the youngest of the hunger strikers, renounced his fast after 41 days. The strike ended after Marileo reached an agreement with the National Youth Service (Sename) in Chile.Marileo was arrested as a juvenile and was originally supposed to be tried under the state’s Antiterrorism Law. However, the terms of the agreement — which Marileo’s lawyer admits is not an impressive agreement — will result in Marileo’s case being transferred from military court to civilian court.

Additionally,  the agreement includes — among other things — the commencement of a dialogue to create intercultural spaces inside prisons; allowing Mapuche to wear their traditional clothing; and for intercultural training of Sename personnel.
