Court Prohibits Use of “Secret Witnesses” in Mapuche Murder Trial
On Monday, July 4th, the Oral Court of Angol began hearing a murder case with a Mapuche victim and five Mapuche defendants. In bringing the case, the Chilean prosecutor indicated his intent to call 26 witnesses, including at least two “secret witnesses” — witnesses whose identities are hidden from the defendants and their attorneys. But on Wednesday, in a 2-1 decision, the Court denied the prosecutor the right to use any secret witnesses. Continue reading
