Five Mapuche Communities Receive Lands from CONADI
In a November 19th press release, CONADI (the Chilean government’s Indigenous development corporation) announced that it had purchased lands for five Mapuche communities in the Araucanía Region of the country. In total, the communities received more than 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of land at a cost of more than $US 3,ooo,ooo to the Chilean government. According to the report, including the most recent purchases the Chilean government has delivered more than 8,000 hectares (nearly 20,000 acres) of lands to Indigenous peoples during 2011.
