The Aymara are an indigenous group who live in the Andes and Altiplano (high plains) regions of Bolivia, Chile, and Peru.

According to the 2002 Chilean Census, about 48,000 individuals identified themselves as Aymara, which (according to the 2009 CASEN data) make them approximately 8.1% of the indigenous population living in the country. Worldwide, the population is estimated at about 2 million.

A more detailed history is forthcoming.
