Supreme Court Upholds Decision Against Lafkenche Communities

On October 14, 2010 the Supreme Court upheld a decision against a number of Lafkenche communities in the Mehuin area of the Los Ríos region in Chile.  The case concerns the construction of a duct to discharge treated waste water from a cellulose plant in Valdivia into the ocean. Piñera Announces Roundtable with Mapuche

On Friday, President Piñera announced to the country that a roundtable discussion with the Mapuche will commence in Temuco next week, specifically on the hill of Ñielol. The announcement came as a surprise to most and occurred on a grand stage–during the raising of Chile’s flag at the start of the Bicentennial celebrations. Continue reading

Lafkenche Acquire Coastal Rights

On August 20, 2010 the Chilean government approved an application to essentially turn over control of more than 250 acres of coastal waters to the Altué community, which is located in southern Chile. These communities are part of the Lafkenche communities, which is one of the large Mapuche sub-groups. Continue reading
